May Day

Woot So another quick update with Maibaum! This is short as I had planned to attach it with the Berlin post, but that post is going to be very long. Enjoy this snippet of Maitag!

Mai Tag:

May first is May day. In Austria it is a holiday and we get out of school and businesses are closed. So we took an excursion up to this great little park that is a lot like Caralon Park in Ohio. The park showed what life was like in the Alps way back in the day. We wandered for a bit and got to see Schnapps being brewed. After it’s first distillation we could have a taste. It was VERY strong and to me gross. I’m not a huge Schapps fan and have sworn off of it after a crazy night with friends haha.

Later that day we got to watch them erect the Maibaum, which took over 2 hours!!!!. Basically a Maibaum is a tree that is cut down and the bark is filed off. Then to the top there are three rings suspended with ribbons and pretzels attached. These are the rings that one must climb to the top to and retrieve a ribbon for your love. So only guys try and climb the Maibaum. Did I mention they do this in their underwear? Needless to say some guys pulled it off and others didn’t. One guy from our book tried, but didn’t reach the top.
